A large bushel of elderberries cluster together on a branch.
One of our favorites—Elderberry!

On a recent local hike, we came across some beautiful clusters of ripe elderberries, and that means one thing: syrup season! Elderberry syrup is a time-honored remedy, perfect for supporting wellness as we head into the fall cold and flu season.
Elderberries have been widely studied for their powerful immune-boosting properties. They’re rich in compounds called anthocyanins—the same plant pigments that give many purple foods their deep color. These compounds are known for their antioxidant and immunostimulant effects, helping the body respond more effectively to seasonal challenges.

Research has shown that elderberry syrups and tinctures are not only safe and cost-effective but also effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms. Best of all, they’re easy to make at home with just a few simple ingredients!

Apple Cider Vinegar for horses

A large glass jar filled with homemade amber colored apple cider vinegar and cut apples,

Make your own ACV

Making a fantastic ACV is very simple to do.
Use 5 to 6 apples, washed and roughly chopped.  These don’t need to be perfect and or fancy.

Place apples in a large gallon jar (I use a large deli pickle style jar).  Add ¼ cup of sugar
Cover with spring or filtered water.  Leave about 2 inches of head space.

Cover with a fabric cover and secure with a rubber band. This will allow fermentation and keep out bugs and impurities

Let sit in a quiet, dark corner for one month. There may be some opacity in the liquid or a jelly- like layer can form on the surface. This is the vinegar’s mother.  It is natural and desirable.

Strain and discard the apples, bottle and seal.  No need to refrigerate.
